Get to Know Catherine Chen, Board-Certified Dermatologist in Gilbert.

Dr. Catherine Chen is a board certified dermatologist with over 15 years of experience in the East Valley. Her passion for teaching patients and love for the skin as a systematic, dynamically structured 3-dimensional organ above and below the surface arose from her Rice University education as an architect.

                           

She remembers that when her father passed away during college, he said she would make a good doctor. This inspired her to take pre-med classes at Harvard Extension School while working as a designer. Her journey through doing pathology research at Boston Children’s Hospital led her back to the University of Texas, Galveston, for medical school. She graduated with the school’s highest distinctions, the William Osler Award, and membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

She then went on to a Dermatology residency at Boston University School of Medicine, where she was selected as Chief Resident in her final year. Dr. Chen has been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery, and Archives of Dermatology and given multiple lectures at the AAD national meeting.

Specializing in skin cancer, she is proud of the number of melanomas she is able to detect each year (reported by the Arizona Cancer Registry) and feels a special blessing of protection over her patients. She and her husband, Dr. Thomas Tsai, a family physician in Gilbert, have two sons. The family enjoys serving others at Arizona Community Church and in international ministries. When Dr. Chen is not a Papago Archery mom or at Arizona College Preparatory’s Site Council and tennis team mother, she enjoys boating, swimming, painting, and traveling.
